Breed character:
Berner Lundehound is a hunting dog belonging to a group of Swiss hounds, however, lately more kept as a companion. Its popularity in the Czech Republic rapidly increases, the tri-color coat is very attractive and his emotive look can easy touch anyone‘s heart.
The breed probably occurred in Switzeland by chance. According to proved art it was most probably in the time of ancient Romans. Their mission was to accompany hunters on wildlife. There are more FCI standardized Swiss hounds (Bruno Jura, Schweizer, Luzern). Berner Lundehound is a hunting dog with noble appearance and long waving ears. The coat color is white with black spots or black saddle, tan above the eyes, cheeks, inside the ears and around the back passage. The male dog is 49-59 cm tall, females are 47-57 cm.
Our experience:
Berner laufhund is a beautiful and elegant dog. It has perfect hunting abilities and loves spending time in the nature. It's a great companion that is totally devoted to its owners whereas it is wary of strangers. Bernese Hounds are very sensitive in their nature and they are not suitable for hard hunting training. Bernese Hound has a lot of energy and will be happy while doing any activity with you. We cottoned on agility and long walks with no leash. Lately we keep up our condition through regular cycling trips. We also tried out coursing and Cookie on very first occasion ran independently and in the end killed the tuft (we did not expected anything else though).
